The ANTA KT5 “TCM” Arrives Inspired By Klay Thompson’s Rehabilitation Journey

The ANTA KT5 "TCM" arrives inspired by Klay Thompson's rehabilitation journey.

Unfortunately on Thursday, June 13th, 2019, during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, Klay Thompson suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. While the injury was heartbreaking to all of us, it didn’t stop Klay from knocking down two free throws for his Golden State Warriors before departing to the locker room for treatment. The newest colorway of Klay Thompson’s fifth signature shoe, the ANTA KT5 “TCM”, is arriving inspired by Klay’s resurgence and rehabilitation from his injury, as well as his trip to China during the Summer of 2019 to launch his KT5 signature shoe and receive treatment for his injury.

The ANTA KT5 “TCM” colorway features traditional Chinese medicine elements. The story behind its color scheme is inspired by the Game 6 of the 2018-19 NBA Finals, when Klay suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. While he and the Warriors lost the champion in regret, he then embarked upon a journey of rehabilitation, Klay’s anecdote of “holding the Chinese medicine book upside down” when he visited a 400-year-old Chinese medical center in Shanghai during his trip to China last year, and experienced the charm of traditional Chinese medicine by receiving the Chinese massage and acupuncture treatment in traditional Chinese hospitals.

In addition, further inspiration behind the “TCM” colorway also pays tribute to the dedication and commitment of the medical staff during the epidemic. The Chinese name of “TCM” “妙手回春” sounds “Meow Show Hway Chwin”, which means to bring the dying back to life by using a miraculous cure. Klay himself also admitted in an interview that his knee had improved a lot through the treatment of Chinese massage and acupuncture.

There are several highlights of “TCM” colorway. The design elements of the pattern on its sock liner and shoe tongue are derived from a traditional Chinese herb Sanqi (Panax Notoginseng). In the classic Chinese medicine book “Compendium of Materia Medica”. Sanqi is used to treat bleeding, traumatic injuries (torn ligament), blood stasis and swelling pain. Its Chinese name Sanqi, homonymous with 37 points, is a tribute to Klay’s NBA-record 37 points for a single quarter. This special colorway is composed of three colors: the emerald green symbolizes the Chinese medicine box, the gold represents the handle of the medicine box, and black. The original graphics, texts and icons of the part of traumatic injuries from the Compendium of Materia Medica covers a large area of the upper, and it is made of the special material of DuPont paper. The outsole of the shoe, mainly in dark green, is printed with vivid characters of its Chinese name“妙手回春”(“Meow Show Hway Chwin”) and the pattern of Sanqi. The consumers will also get a custom-made wooden shoe box when they purchase the shoes. The whole product has delivered a strong sense of Chinese ancient history.

The special edition ANTA KT5 “TCM” colorway will be the final reveal of the KT5 series and is set to release on July 11th, 2020, as well as a real-time interaction with his fans through video chat. Expect them to be available at ANTA retailers like ANTA.com once they release in the coming days. Stay tuned as we are very excited and looking forward to publishing our review of the KT5 “TCM” very soon on TheSneakerBrief.com.
